Akai’s MPC series enabled thousands of aspiring producers to have quick access to high quality hardware, though priced at $5,000 in 1988, not everyone could afford one.

With the progression of DAW’s and the release of alternative options such as NI’s Maschine, the role of the MPC has lessened and Akai have now added an iPad version to their arsenal with iMPC Pro.

Complete with 64 tracks, a 16 pad drum machine, 3 EQ bands, 4 FX sends and gain sliders per channel. The software is bundled with over 1,400 samples from purchase, so there’s no need to worry about resources, and if you run out of ideas you can also sample directly from iTunes.

The Good:

  • Relatively cheap
  • 64 channels
  • 1,400 unique samples for free

The Bad:

  • Almost 500mb in size
  • Learning curve might put some users off
