Native Instruments Maschine hardware and software performance package has been a winning combination for many performing artists, studio wizards and sample technicians alike.

Since the launch there has been multiple updates on both the desktop application and the out of box MIDI hardware, NI has released Maschine 2 and Maschine Studio to cater to the different markets.

The iOS version doesn’t offer as much functionality as it’s desktop counterpart and comes across as more of an on-the-go fun app than a studio essential, but it offers high quality sampling via iTunes, a 16 pad drum machine and over 100mb of original samples with options to expand on that via in-app purchases (£0.79 per expansion).

Complete with a four track mixer and controls for different parameters such as gain, pan and pitch, it will give you everything you need to create quick ideas.

The Good:

• Not too expensive
• Over 400 samples free with the app

The Bad:

• Limited to four tracks
• Only two effects channels
