Fresh Picks: Doctor Dru

Martino Donzello has made huge contributions to Hamburg’s club scene under his Doctor Dru venture. Releasing tracks with Upon You, Flying Circus and Diynamic.

As a label owner, Donzello has also welcomed productions from CamelPhat, Bambook, Sebastian Leger and Moscoman to his own Jeudi Records imprint.

His most recent outing saw him release the double-sided Barial EP, a collaborative effort alongside M.E.M.O. that arrived on the Berlin-based Mobilee Records.

Following the EP’s release, Doctor Dru took the reigns for this months Fresh Picks, where he includes recently released cuts from the likes of Red Axes, Chaim, TERR, Kino Todo, Whitesquare and Innellea. Find his selections and words below.

Out of Orbit & Shpongle – No Disco (Red Axes Remix)
Label: Shamanic Tales
Release: November 29th

For me one of the most inspiring acts out there. These guys are on fire and this remix unites everything I love about them. Especially their vocal treatment. The orginal I also dig a lot. A very unique mix of psytrance, funk and disco. It already delivers the perfect ingredients for their saucy funky style, taking it more in the disco direction.

Doctor Dru & M.E.M.O. – Barial
Label: Mobilee Records
Release: November 15th

I’m very happy about the outcome of this collaboration with Memo. It was a spontaneous decision to work on something while I was in the south of Spain. We never made music together before and just knew each other since some weeks. You just let it flow and then you have a piece of music which is so nicely received on the floor. Amazing!

Whitesquare – Pressured Mind
Label: Whitesquare Series
Release: November 1st

A recent monthly collection for me has to include one of Whitesquare’s tracks for sure. I have been playing his productions a lot and this one is no exception. Been following him for years and it’s great to watch him developing his very own sound. He just puts in what’s needed for a tune with precise sound design.

Chaim — The Piano One (Kino Todo Remix)
Label: Blue Shadow
Release: November 8th

A lot of inspiring music was coming out of Israel’s lively electronic music scene in 2019, leaving a big footprint this year. Kino Todo is one of the promising young guns. Great work here as well as on his solo Gidafi Na EP on the new imprint of Chaim and Jenia Tarsol – Blue Shadow. Looking forward to what’s upcoming.

TERR – Energy Sync (Club Mix)
Label: Phantasy Sound
Release: November 29th

I’m a fan of Brazilian artist Daniela Caldella’s project TERR. I already loved her Tale Of Devotion that came earlier this year and now she is back on Phantasy Sound with Energy Sync. I feel a lot of her nostalgic, romantic mix with the electro-ish, disco-ish energy and her always recognisable voice. It brings back memories and is still sounding so modern and fresh.

Innellea – Visionquest
Label: Afterlife
Release: November 29th

This one came right at the end of the month. Innellea delivering a great EP on Afterlife. An astonishing duo from Munich. Representing the young generation of producers with a lot of creativity, knowledge, focus and output. Visionquest is my favourite song here uniting their very own style of boldness paired with a sense for a great melody and sound design.

Doctor Dru & M.E.M.O.’s Barial EP is out now on Mobilee Records.
