We caught up with House of Virus to chat about the duo, starting a label with Marshall Jefferson and getting DJ support from Carl Cox himself, say hello to one of house music’s future stars.

So who is House of Virus?

House of Virus

House of Virus is Virus J & Dirty Orkestra. We formed about three years ago and are based respectively in Manchester and Vilnius, Lithuania. We had been DJing and making music independently for years before that, but found a lot of similarities in our taste and the direction in which we wanted to take our music, so working together seemed like a natural progression.

You just teamed up with Marshall Jefferson to kick start the Freakin909 imprint, cool working with a veteran?

House of Virus

We’ve been great friends with Marshall now for many years and worked on a fair few tracks together so we decided this was the next logical step. It’s amazing to work with such a legend in the house scene. It’s a word that gets used a lot but Marshall absolutely qualifies. I should also mention DJ Ides, who has made the entire venture possible and has some fantastic music of his own coming up on the label.

And what releases do you have coming up on the label then?

House of Virus

As House Of Virus we have released a new version of Jimi Polo’s classic house cut ‘Better Days’. It’s something we worked on with Jimi which gives it a real hit of authenticity. It’s been going down incredibly well and we’ve had some incredible support from some of the biggest players: Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Fatboy Slim, etc.

Freakin909 has a really strong schedule over the next few months, releases from Ben R Saunderson, Soul Divide, House Of Virus & LoVance and then a new one from Marshall Jefferson & Jay C. People have been really receptive to what we’re doing, both with our own production and with the label, so hopefully we’re doing something right!

We’ve been told you’re remixing Marshall’s Mushrooms original, and it’s already been supported by names like Carl Cox?

House of Virus

Yeah, it was an honour to be able to remix this. Obviously people have a lot of love for the original, so we wanted to do something respectful, but take it to a different place – we didn’t see the point in just trying to redo the original vibe as it’s pretty much untouchable in that respect.

I feel we struck a good balance, as did Want More & Can’t Say No who went pretty big with their remix! Our version has been knocking around since last year so we were really excited to finally get it released. Carl Cox was one of the first to have it and start hammering it – I think this video of him at Awakenings was one of the first time it was played, and it’s just kicked on from there.

What’s the coolest thing in your house?

House of Virus

Tricky, depends on your definition of cool really. My cat’s pretty damn cool, and Virus J has a pasta making machine that he’s always showing off with, so let’s go with them.

Tell us a useless fact about yourself?

House of Virus

My all-time favourite trainers are Adidas Superstar and Virus J hates winter: can’t get much more useless than that!

Anything to add?

House of Virus

A massive thank you to everyone for the love and support so far, both for House Of Virus and Freakin909. It’s not an easy (or necessarily wise) thing to launch a label at the moment, but we put our heart and souls into it and it’s a fantastic feeling when people get what you’re trying to do. Check us out on SoundCloud or wherever else you listen to music as we’ve got a lot more in store for you…
