Ark Patrol talks Primo LP, remixing Galimatias and collaboration

Ark Patrol, Heroic Recordings, Galimatias, soundspace, interview, at all

We reached out to American beatsmith Ark Patrol to get the scope on his second studio album – Primo.

We get a look into the life of an artist on the brink of breaking through, as he talks official remixes for Galimatias, the recent contrast in sound and what the near future will hopefully bring.

So who is Ark Patrol?

Ark Patrol

Ark Patrol is the name of the electronic project I put out some of my more poppy electronic melodies through. It’s made up of just one person, me.

But then, you could also say that Ark Patrol is the product of the influence of many different bands and artists over my entire life so far, and so in the end it’s really many more people than just me.

Your ‘Primo LP’ is due out on Heroic in a few weeks, tell us about the album and how you feel it represents you as a creative?

Ark Patrol

Well, Primo is sort of the by-product of shooting for something beyond your reach. Say for example that Ark Patrol was a revolver being fired at a shooting range.

These songs off of Primo.. they’re the empty shells being ejected from the gun. They’re not what I’m aiming for but instead are a consequence of experimentation and ambition.

It’s a bit contrasting from your debut ‘Voyager LP’, was there a conscious change in direction or was it just subtle influences that steered the new sound of Ark Patrol?

Ark Patrol

It’s definitely a conscious change, but I could never be one to deny the ever-present influence of new music gradually being introduced into the bloodstream.

Voyager was a stab in the dark, Primo is me stubbing my toe on the couch in the same dark room. I’m feeling out this space I’m in and so any direction that’s not one I’ve already been in will help me grow tenfold.

You were chosen for an official remix of Galimatias & Alina Baraz ‘Make You Feel’, alongside guys like FKJ and Pomo; tell us about the experience?

Ark Patrol

Well, it is what it is. Someone over at Ultra happened to like my music and so when I asked for stems for the remix, they took a look at what I had. Then I was offered a spot on the remix album, which I couldn’t be happier to accept.

I’m not really a fan of my own work so let me just say it’s doing quite a bit better than I think it should. Good thing it’s not up to me.

It’s now touching 100,000 plays and has received some incredible feedback, is there any other Ark Patrol remixes in the works you can talk about?

Ark Patrol

There are quite a few. One of them features a small but soulful duo all the way from Australia. The original track is one you would listen to in the dark, alone, outside. It’s one of my favorites, to be sure.

A much bigger one I’m getting ready to play live now is heavily reminescent of a certain Australian (again) superstar. I’ve no idea how it’ll actually pan out live so, well, here’s hoping for the best.

The album has collaborations with Veronika Redd and Dooqu, were these specific planned for the album or was it more organic?

Ark Patrol

These collabs are almost always organic. I don’t have singers in mind when I’m writing music, but sooner or later it’ll happen where you’re in need of a one.

From there, it’s just a matter of who do you know? Like pretty much everything in the artist path, you’ve gotta use whatever you’ve got (not that I could ask for better vocalists. Thanks Emma & Birk. <3).

What’s the coolest thing in your house?

Ark Patrol

My house is overflowing with art. My good painter friend who’s also renting a room here is a gusher of weird, crazy, and genius ideas. So there’s never a shortage of odd inspiration lying about. It’s had quite the influence on my music so far.

Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

Ark Patrol

Somewhere floating along in the web, there’s a tinder account with my name on it. It took a lot of self-control not to list all my music stuff on my bio. I don’t remember if I deactivated it or deleted it.. but it’s out there somewhere.

What’s your goals for the rest of 2015, and maybe early 2016?

Ark Patrol

New album, mixtape, hawt live shows and vintage merchandising. There’s a graphic designer developing a new logo for me; I’m working with him a bit on that.

I’d also like to survive to see the new Star Wars this December. Next year I’m hoping to do another long trawl through the depths of the internet to update all my samples. Call it a new year’s resolution.

Anything to add?

Ark Patrol

I’d just like to say something to any fans reading this. Thanks for listening – whoever you are. Your time is valuable and it means a lot that you would stop and listen to my work. Here’s to the next 3 years together, you and I. Cheers.
