Interview: Redraft Memories reflects on remixing Irvine Welsh and The Sci-Fi Soul Orchestra

Redraft Memories follows up original music on imprints like Nervous Records and Second State, with an intelligent, dancefloor-focused ‘Disco Remix’ of Irvine Welsh and The Sci-Fi Soul Orchestra’s ‘Men In Love’ on Port Sunshine Records.

We spoke to the Mexican artist about his approach to the remix, the differences between reworking and writing original music, breaking onto established labels, and more.

How has summer been for you so far in 2026? Been watching much of the World Cup?

Actually, it’s raining a lot in Mexico City right now. As for the World Cup, the national team hasn’t done too badly, but we can’t believe these guys!

You just remixed Irvine Welsh and The Sci-Fi Soul Orchestra’s ‘Men In Love’ original, what was your initial idea or approach when you were first sent the track?

They sent me the entire song and stems, and since the original is disco, the remix is essentially a sample of it. I chopped the bass, wrote a new one, and made some loops with the drums and strings, and also the vocals. It was difficult but I’m happy with the outcome, and when I saw Irvine a few months ago, he seemed to like it too.

What do you enjoy most about working on a remix compared to building a track from scratch?

I think it’s a little simpler to work on a remix because the concept is already there and you just need to add your sound. It’s similar to making your own version of something that’s already been done, with your own flavour.

If you could pick any track from any era to remix, what would it be?

That’s a tough decision because I grew up listening to so many great tunes, however, if I had to pick only one it would be Depeche Mode – ‘Enjoy The Silence’, alternatively, if you provide a second option, Underworld’s ‘Dirty Epic’.

Your ‘Men In Love’ edit comes on Port Sunshine Records, and you’ve also released music on Nervous Records and Second State; what advice would you give to producers aiming for similar imprints?

Honestly, I would advise people to create their own music and send it to labels where they believe it will fit, rather than trying too hard to sound like something or someone else. When you create your own sound and style, people will notice and support you, and if you produce constantly, you will develop your distinct sound; practice is essential!

What’s something you think is underrated about DJing in 2026?

Control of the crowd and energy through the flow and selection of tunes; I would say reading the room. (the screens are overrated)
