Following her time as a resident with BBC Radio 1, London-based artist Monki has continued to build momentum as one of the UK’s top selectors.

She’s played every club from Studio 338 and fabric, to Hï Ibiza and Warehouse Project, and her productions have appeared on imprints like DFTD, VIVa Music and Weapons.

Alongside her own music, she also heads up the &Friends label, where since early 2018 she has released tracks from Big Miz, Chambray, Theo Kottis, Dart and DJ Boring.

Following the release of her brand new ‘I Woke Up’ EP on Hot Trax, which also featured remix work from PBR Streetgang and David Berrie, we welcome Monki to our 40 Questions series, where she mentions Louie Vega, Lucy Liu, Armand Van Helden and Orangutang’s.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

Sat at home, answering emails.

02. What year were you born?


03. Do you have a nickname?

Monki, it came from school. My surname is Monkman.

04. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

I have a house rabbit named Thierry.

05. How would you describe yourself?

Easy going.

06. Worst experience as a DJ?

When a security guard called me a racial slur.

07. Best experience as a DJ?

Giving people a good time with music I enjoy is a blessing really.

08. Favourite record label?

Strictly Rhythm.

09. What’s your biggest weakness?


10. First record you ever paid for?

Eric B & Karim – Eric B is President.

11. What’s your morning routine?

Hot water with lemon, coffee, meditate.

12. Your dream collaboration?

Louie Vega.

13. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

That’s for me to know.

14. Who’s your biggest inspiration?

My partner.

17. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

My dad put together a photo book for me.

I think I’ve smashed it this Christmas, but can’t really say yet.

19. What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been to?

Been to some pretty remote parts of Philippines.

20. And one place you want to visit?

There are loads but Galapagos is up there.

21. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

Armand Van Helden.

22. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

I’d probably be doing something in sport.

23. Worst job you’ve ever had?

Labouring. But it also taught me a lot.

24. Favourite record right now?

The Vision – Heaven, great record from this year.

Waaaay to hard of a question!

Ox tongue maybe.

2001 Lucy Liu.

31. Favourite club you’ve played at?

I played in a wine cellar turned club that was over 100 years old in Georgia on NYE.

32. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Defected Croatia is up there.

33. Craziest story of being on the road?

Ha not sure I can name and shame on here. My tour life is a lot tamer than it use to be.

34. Weirdest request as a DJ?

Got asked to sign a shoe once.

35. If you had one superpower what would it be?

To be able to copy cat anything.

36. Late sleeper or early riser?

Early riser.

37. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

Don’t really spend much time on there if I’m honest!

38. The top thing on your bucket list?

I want to see wild Orangutang’s in the Borneo jungle.

39. Most memorable moment of your life so far?

Bit too percy that one.

40. Will you ever be done with music?

Not right now but as for a career yes, I have other aspirations that lay outside of music; But as a passion and as a hobby it will always be a part of me.
