Aus Music get 2015 off to a flying start with a sophisticated four piece project from understated genius Youandewan. As an artist, the Berlin resident has enjoyed a modest yet convincing assent in recent years, winning the hearts and minds of the underground community with a series of rich productions and thought-provoking sets. Despite having the weight of expectation upon it, Spiral Arms does not disappoint; a mature and considered medley of sound rounded off superbly with a lively contribution from Marquis Hawkes.
The swooping yet immersive chords of Stak Poly Looms start proceedings off, layered neatly with xylophone melodies and bold drums that keep things light and upbeat. Isabel occupies a slightly darker territory, with greater emphasis on ominous pads and a thick, slow-moving bass guitar that dominates the mid section and conjures an atmosphere of great suspense.
Next up is Fool Be Cool, a melancholic masterpiece and the perfect embodiment of Youandewan’s sound. A grubby acid line keeps the groove while melodic elements, soulful vocals, and sharp percussion merge for an intricate and emotive finale. Marquis Hawkes’ interpretation is a much more club orientated affair, the vocals cut, shaped and looped to keep things storming forward in a bold and steely manner.
A complete release from an artist who remains one of the most innovative and gifted producers around.
