Studio Essentials: Magda

Studio Essentials: Magda

Based in Berlin via Poland and Detroit, Magda has been surrounded by club music since her youth, an environment which seemingly fuelled a lifelong passion for all things techno and minimal.

Since her breakthrough in the earlier years of the current century, she’s seen huge success on multiple continents as one of the key artists for both Richie Hawtin’s Minus, and her own Items & Things, a label she launched alongside Marc Houle and Troy Pierce.

Her contribution to our Studio Essentials series brings an insight into the process of how she makes music, including her favourite poly-synth, her approach to using drum machines, and more. Read the full feature – including words from Magda herself – below.

Black Corporation Deckard’s Dream

Studio Essentials: Magda

“This Polyphonic 8 voice synthesizer is just stunning. It’s based on the classic Yamaha CS-80 which is famous for being used on the Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis. The sounds are very warm and spacious and have a science fiction quality unlike anything else. The sliders give it a very versatile touch and the LFO is really fun to play with. I used it on the entire Blotter Trax – Superconductor LP (a collaborative side project).”

Linn Electronics LinnDrum

Studio Essentials: Magda

“The LinnDrum is my favourite drum machine because there’s nothing quite like it. As with all analogue vintage gear, each machine has a personality of its own and that’s what I love the most. Released in 1982, the imperfections it creates and the power it posseses is just incredible. It has a very distinct punchy snare drum and kick and was used by Prince on nearly every album.”

Finegear Dust Collector

Studio Essentials: Magda

“I love “dirt and dust” from vintage machines so I was very excited to discover this piece of gear. It has two control voltage LFO’s which can be chained to two tape saturators and a delay and phaser. The results quickly become pretty crazy and psychedelic. This machine never gets boring! However, my favorite feature is the built in Springverb. You can screw off the plexiglass on top and directly hit the two springs inside getting some serious wobble.”

Haken Continuum Mini

Studio Essentials: Magda

“This is a very complex and interesting instrument (fingerboard, synthesizer, and controller). The playing surface has been designed to translate finger movement from one or two fingers at a time into beautiful musical expression. Besides being a versatile controller with the ability to connect to anything via MIDI and analog CV, it is also a complete musical instrument, thanks to its internal sound engine, the EaganMatrix. With its software you can precisely control every parameter and create some other worldly sounds.”

Make Noise Morphagene

Studio Essentials: Magda

“This module is really wild! It allows you to load various samples and completely deconstruct them in ways I didn’t know were possible. It uses reels, splices and genes to create new sounds from those that already exist. The possibilities are endless and you are left scratching your head wondering what happened?”
