Australian Tsuba give’s the world their first release of the 2015 year. An impressive and well selected four track player from the experienced Steve Cook. Titled ‘Haze EP’, it offers four premium cuts of straight up, no thrills deep grooves and a level of sonic excellence that can only come from the belly of an analog power synth, the Roland 303.
‘Haze’ comes in first, emitting a low energy and a soft resonance from the ever loved 303. It’s repetitive riff sitting calmly below the equally analog drum hits, all while the use of subtle reverbs brings a sense of progression to the arrangement. ‘Warehouse In My Mind’ offers a similar aesthetic, though with a slightly stronger mood, and the use of pitched vocals and synth pads gives off a slightly numbing effect.
‘Hypnotronic’ continues on the same path, but the use of techie percussion and denser reverbs pushes a clubbier sound, especially with the apparent resonance of the 303. ‘Flashback’ pushes the bar to close the player, it’s intensity is in your face, a lot more so than any of the other tracks. The resonance on the bassline is sharp and the use of old e-piano’s is welcomed on a very raw EP.
