Q&A: Swoose

Q&A: Swoose | Soundspace Interview

Danny Simpson, otherwise known as Swoose in the music world, talks to Soundspace regarding his move from Belfast to Spain, his favorite gigs to date and what plans he has for the near future. Read on!

So who is Swoose?

A tall Irish boy called Danny Simpson, with a passion for house music.

Tell us one thing we shouldn’t know about you?

I nearly got thrown out of school as a kid for flashing my arse on camera in moving image arts class and not deleting the evidence.

You’ve played gigs such as Space, Ibiza and WHP in Manchester, pretty impressive for an up & coming DJ?

Yea those gigs were pretty special gigs for me personally. The promoter of Stiff Kitten were i was resident mailed me and said the guy who ran Warehouse Project was looking me to play. I thought he was having me on but he got in touch and that was that.

The space gig was through the Bicep boys. They hooked me and my mate Cromby up with that. It was probably my favorite gig to date, not just because it was in space, but because 40 heads from Belfast made the trip over too.The atmosphere was unreal. People up on chairs dancing, lamps swinging in the air. I think at one stage the guy who owned space turned the music down on the amp to try and calm us down haha. Definitely one to remember!

What are you listening to at the moment?

Right now as I type, A Flock of Seagulls – I ran, tune. In general, as mentioned before, my passion is house music, I like early deep house music. Simple groove, pads, stabs and a cheeky vocal sample does it for me.

I’m a big fan of Labels such as KMS, Strictly Rhythm, Sushitech, MLIU and Henry Street. Artists such as Ron Trent, Chez Damier, Nail, Boo Williams, Mr G, Brawther, Mood II Swing, Kings of Tomorrow and of course the king… Kerri chandler.

You made the move from Northern Ireland to Barcelona, can you give us some more info on that?

Basically I’ve been coming to sonar for the last four years. The buzz around Barcelona around that week is class and I was already saving to get out of Belfast. Don’t get me wrong Belfast is like no other when it comes to DJ’ing and the scene back home is so strong at the minute for such a small city, but I needed a break from the lifestyle, weather and culture and needed inspiration elsewhere.

I was originally planning on going to Berlin (CLICHE) but I don’t speak German. The next place was Tokyo but I don’t speak Japanese, so I decided the day after I got back after sonar I was going to live in Barcelona (I can speak some Spanish). It was an impulse decision, went into work the first day after sonar and booked a one way flight on my lunch break and moved at the end of a month with a suitcase. Best decision I ever made.

Can you reveal any plans you might have for future?

Well I’m leaving Barcelona in may but I’m moving to London to pursue a career in music. Barcelona has its beaches, sun and cheap beer but for me, the music scene isn’t as strong as I initially thought here. It seems some of promoters are in it for the wrong reasons which is a bit disheartening so I thought what better place than London. I believe it has way more opportunities there. Music wise, I’ve got about 7 tracks or so finished at the minute which I’m waiting to let loose once I arrive in London and hit it hard.

I have also just started a mix series featuring house music heroes. I plan to do a mix a week of a selected artist using only their tracks. Almost a thank you for bringing house music into my life.
