Q&A: Phil Kieran

When a friend suggested an interview with techno heavyweight Phil Kieran we were just as shocked as we were excited.  With releases on labels such as Cocoon and track titles alongside Green Velvet anyone with even the slightest interest in electronic music knows Phil’s name!

So who is Phil Kieran?

Phil Kieran:

It’s me.

Soundspace:

What does an average day consist of?

Phil Kieran:

Most days, I wake up help get my daughter out to school, then usually head to the studio for a bit , depending on whats on at the weekend, I could be getting stuff ready for playing out, if not i’m usually writing some music.

Soundspace:

What would you say has been a highlight in your career, either as a producer or DJ?

Phil Kieran:

It’s hard to pick one thing, i’m proud of still being able to make music and that people seem to take me seriously, i’m proud people still take an interest in what I do, otherwise it would be game over.

Soundspace:

Your latest project ‘Le Carousel‘, can you explain a bit more regarding that?

Phil Kieran:

It’s an album that has just taken on a life of its own, it’s music I’ve made that I feel is very honest and a true reflection of who I am, not pretending to be somebody else.

Soundspace:

Do you have any advice for anyone considering starting their own label while trying to also focus on their DJ career?

Phil Kieran:

It’s not easy to get one started and make it float above all the nonsense, just goes back to the age old thing, just make sure the music is good and that you really believe in it.

Soundspace:

If you had a chance to do something you’ve always wanted to do, anything, what would it be?

Phil Kieran:

Float in space.
