Q&A: Kolombo

Q&A: Kolombo

LouLou Records boss, Kolombo is arguably the most renowned and well known artist to feature on a Soundspace interview. We were throughly excited when given the chance to ask the Belgian DJ a few questions and were equally excited when the answers came in. Read on to find out about his recent collab with Miguel Campbell, an insight into the Mugwump project and more.

So who is Kolombo?

Kolombo

Just a Belgian DJ & producer enjoying his life to the max.

Your collaboration with Miguel Campbell just went out on your own LouLou Records, can you tell us the inspiration behind the collaboration?

Kolombo

I saw Miguel last year at Loveland festival (Amsterdam) and our first contact was very very friendly. Funny thing is, I saw him again a few days later in Brazil and as the friendly conversation continued and our feelings for music seemed the same, we decided to try a collab. He came to my place for 2 days and it turned out be a very interesting and fun studio session, with a track we are both happy with as a result.

With imprints such as OFF Recordings, Bunny Tiger and Kittball receiving your demos, was their a particular reason for starting your own label?

Kolombo

Not really. I sent some of my tracks to these labels because they are really good friends and it’s nice to be on Sharam Jey or Tube & Berger’s label, for example. However, I started LouLou Records with my partner Jerom a little before that – around 2004 – but the label only really grew to be what it is over the last two years. It still feels fast, maybe too fast for us!

Soundspace

Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

Kolombo

I’m just a simple guy enjoy my life and music. If it turns out that, one day, I’m not enjoying myself anymore, then I will stop the music for sure!

Soundspace

Three tracks you can’t get enough of right now?

Kolombo

There are many pearls out there so to name only 3 is a tough task! I guess I could narrow it down to the classic sounds of a few artists that are yet to bore me, in the likes of Marshal Jefferson, Todd Terry and Tyree Cooper.

Can you give us an insight into your Mugwump project?

Kolombo

Geoffroy is the boss of Mugwump, and we finished the album around two years ago. I really enjoyed working with him because it’s completely different to the way I do my own productions. It has influenced me a lot. The album is coming soon on K7.

Let’s Drink is our favorite Kolombo production, are there any of your own tracks you hold close to you?

Kolombo

Yes, I really love that track as well. For me, simple and groovy beats will always reign. My aim is to make each track simple but without it being evident and cheap sounding.

Soundspace

Can you reveal any plans you have for the future?

Kolombo

I don’t know what I’m doing next week! I guess my focus will shift more to the label to foster the growth and success we’ve seen over the past two years.
