We got in touch with Lyndon at Champion Sound Music to talk about upcoming releases on the label, advice on starting a label and the reason behind only releasing original music from Irish artists.

So who is Champion Sound Music?

Champion Sound Music actually is a management company; Champion Sound Recordings is the record label that is affiliated with it.  Initially the label was set up just as an outlet for artists that were signed to the management company but we have enjoyed moderate success with the releases so the label has become a permanent feature and a separate business of its own.

You only release original music from Irish artists, do you think this holds you back?

Champion Sound Music

No not at all, it’s our unique selling point. We get a lot of approaches by artists outside Ireland but we are fairly adamant that this is our purpose. Also Ireland has such a broad range of musical talent that in the past had to leave to make it. We like to think that we are changing that perception a bit. Building something up that belongs here and retains the talent we are always surprised at the great stuff that we uncover now and again.

Do you have advice for anyone interested in starting their own label?

Have bottomless amounts of time and money to put in. It’s a very tough saturated market these days and hard to break in to. However there are lots and lots of business models these days. A digital only label can be started and can run for a very small amount of money. The main thing these days is building up a good audience and an easy way to reach them.

If you could live in any country for a day, where would it be and why?

Jamaica, it has lovely beaches, food, rum and music.

What can we expect from Champion Sound Music over the next year?

From this moment we have lots happening.  We are releasing a new Ryan Vail EP and an Unknown Remix EP before the end of 2013.  Next year is a big year for us as both Ryan Vail and Unknown are releasing their debut albums.  This is a big step for us and marks a step up for both the artists and the label.
