Rising Muscovite bod Nphonix returns for a second outing on Shifting Peaks with the ‘See the Future’ EP, another three track instalment in this unfolding story of Eastern promise amidst the existential uncertainties of modern day Russia.
Lead track ‘See the Future’ has a quick look at the all pervading retroism that House is embracing at the moment, maybe has a respectful passing nod at Larry Heard as the loose, square wave bass line lollops in, before riding a hybrid broken/house rhythm, subtly driving stabs and pitched about vocal snatch off towards more modernist, Bassier climes.
‘Drifting in Barnard’ is built around rolling, mid tempo breaks and tinges of classic hardcore attitude, swooning about swathed in layers of hypnogogic pads and spacey atmospherics.
The gloves come off with ‘Muscovite Beat’ as Nphonix’s affinity to skittering Juke/Footwork rhythms asserts itself via propulsive claps on the one, a jerky groove and looped up vocals, before the weightless string break lifts the whole thing off into other realms.
