Your score for the silent film ‘A Page Of Madness’ is set to debut during ADE’15 at Melkweg Cinema, tell us about the project?

Marc Houle

One day I was watching a bunch of silent films and I stumbled across this one from Japan. At first I was struck by the visuals but then once I got into the story I really started to love it. It had a soundtrack which was added in the 70s I think – some jazz stuff that didnt fit at all to the moods going on in the film. So for fun I started to do a soundtrack to bring out the dark and just couldnt stop.

With the original film having been released almost a century ago in 1920, it’s a pretty unique task when compared with anything you’ve ever done?

Marc Houle

Yeah, this is way off my normal scope but it somehow fits to what I’ve always been doing – creating soundscapes.

The past 18 months or so have seen you put music out on Minus, Hot Creations and of course your own Items & Things imprint, will we hear new Marc Houle productions before the new year?

Marc Houle

If you come and see the film you can haha. Sure, I’m always making new stuff to bring on stage during my normal live shows because I think I would get really bored playing the same old tracks week after week. It’s really fun for me to play shows on the weekend and hit the studio in between. The two lives perpetuate themselves.

And can you share any upcoming info in relation to Items & Things?

Marc Houle

We have a big announcement coming for this winter but it’s just a tiny bit too early to mention yet. So if you like the music we put out, expect some great stuff this winter. Besides that, we just released the best record I’ve heard in a long time from Madato.

Besides your ‘Page Of Madness’ live performance and premiere, is there anything you’re looking forward to at ADE’15?

Marc Houle

I’ve been so cooped up that the thing I’m looking most forward to is seeing faces that I havent seen in a while. It’s gonna be fun to see how many events I can pack into the short time I’m there.

What’s the coolest thing in your house?

Marc Houle

My dog. She’s cool. I have an old Thomas Edison record that’s pretty cool to hold as well.

Thanks for talking to us, anything to add?

Marc Houle

We need a punk techno movement to shake up the commercialism!
