Your recent remix of Just Kiddin’s ‘Thinking About It’ has blew up on SoundCloud, what approach did you take with the remix?

Tom Ferry

I was at a low point creativity wise and was getting very frustrated. I started listening to tracks that usually spark a bit of inspiration in me and the original version of ‘Thinking About It’ is a big one for me. When i put it in to google i saw that there was a remix competition happening so i downloaded the stems straight away. I wanted something a little different but not too drastic so i came up with some hooky piano chords and the rest of the track happened quite quickly. The violin part on the second chorus was inspired by the likes of Grant Nelson. I didn’t expect to win or for it to get much attention but i was happy with the reception it got on soundcloud.

You just revealed the art for your upcoming release on Ultra Records, a huge label and hopefully a huge release, care to talk about it?

Tom Ferry

Yeah it is quite crazy seeing my name on an ultra release. The original instrumental track was one of the first tom ferry tracks I made. The idea of the track though is even older. I wrote the chord progression and basic structure idea about 3 years ago or more. The instrumental mix got a great response on soundcloud and blew me away. I got a lot of emails from a lot of labels i never would of imagined working with but the sampled vocal-chops on the instrumental made it difficult for most labels to risk signing. Then it got put forth to ultra and they offered to put me in touch with some vocalists. I got back some really nice demos from some great vocalists but Joe’s demo just seemed to fit better to me. I had a skype session with joe and duane that week and we finished the track. I had never worked on an original vocal track before so it was new to me but a great experience and im excited to see how people take the track.

Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

Tom Ferry

My car is full of cheesy CD’s. Katy perry, taylor swift and stuff. Most people would think they’re my girlfriends but no, they’re mine. I love cheesy pop music.

You’re no stranger to big releases, having had massive support and feedback on your earlier Mindset stuff, why the change to more danceable, nu disco stuff?

Tom Ferry

Progressive was dying quickly. All the major artists in the scene were leaving to other genres. Solarity turned to house music and became Dusky, Oliver smith went to Meramek and some just seemed to disappear in general. I wanted to move onto something else but wasn’t sure what. When psudo-deep house started getting big in the UK i really liked the sound and gave it a try and loved it. It just happens that i really like making this kind of music and it happens to be the “big thing” right now that EDM is over so it is amazing being able to appeal to a wider audience.

2014 was the year you introduced Tom Ferry, what would make 2015 a great year?

Tom Ferry

To grow tom ferry. Start doing gigs hopefully. Ive been making music for almost 9 years now and ive never DJ’d before so i guess i would try that. Start collabing with some great artists. Work with more vocalists and just get my name out there.

Can you reveal any plans for the future?

Tom Ferry

My main plan is to put more time and effort in to music. I usually only work on music 2 days a week so upping that to 3 would help me a lot. Things are moving fast so i need to take it more seriously now. Other than that im talking to some vocalists which im excited about. But plans could change, a lot has happened in the past year and this year could be the same. I think it will be really fun anyway
