Protostar (right) and a friend (left).

We got in touch with Protostar just in time for his ‘No Fire’ release on Monstercat (listen below).

Coming out of nowhere to charting on Beatport and amassing hundreds of thousands of views on single YouTube uploads, as well as support from Koan Sound, Xilent and Reso among others, Protostar is in line for a bright future.

Soundspace:

In three words, who is Protostar?

Protostar:

In three words… I’d have to say Versatile, Neuro-ey, and Friendly.

Soundspace:

Your Scorpion Pit release on Monstercat reached #4 on Beatport, not bad for a debut single?

Protostar:

Haha, kind of you to say, yeah i was quite shocked myself really, didn’t even expect to enter the charts!

Soundspace:

You said a remix EP is to follow; can you reveal any more regarding that?

Protostar:

Yeah, I’ve been organising this remix EP for Scorpion Pit. I can’t really put a date on it, but I’m doing a VIP for it, and artists such as Kursa, Disprove, Feint, Mandorli, and Audeka should also be involved.

Soundspace:

So will that be coming on Monstercat?

Protostar:

Yes it will be.

Soundspace:

One thing you own but never use?

Protostar:

I have a bunch of these business cards for my music, but I’ve never given them out, probably because i haven’t talked to many promoters face to face recently *Laughs*.

Soundspace:

Favourite record of all time?

Protostar:

That’s a very tough one, because I really don’t have one as i love loads of genres, mainly rock.  But for electronic music i would have to say Eyes on Fire Remix by Zeds Dead.

Soundspace:

You mentioned a number of collaborations you’re taking part in, can you tell us anymore regarding artists or labels?

Protostar:

Soon I should be collaborating with Reso (crazy, i know right?) which should be damn insane.

I have a bunch of other collaborations with guys like Mandorli, Dorincourt, and Feint.
I really want to try push to get the Reso collab onto Inspected if possible, to hit a new audience. I mean I love Monstercat, but it is always good to expand your reach by releasing on other labels from time to time.

Soundspace:

Your Scorpion Pit upload on Monstercat reached over 100,000 plays in less than a month and No Fire with over 100,000 in less than 2 days, how does it feel to have your music heard by such a wide audience?

Protostar:

Yeah I was overwhelmed by the response.  Before it went up I was quite nervous actually, because in my opinion it’s very different to the stuff they usually upload, but they took it well!  The exposure it has given me is crazy to, it’s helped me get support from people like Reso, and heard by guys like Koan Sound, Eptic, Habstrakt etc…Mental!

Soundspace:

Your most recent release with Monstercat, Protostar & MakO ft. Rachel Hirons – No Fire charted at #1 on Beatport, did you expect that kind of feedback?

Protostar:

Not at all. We thought it might do well in the chart, but not that well. Especially since beatport released the tune a day late and then proceeded to crash the day it released; I think we managed to make quite the recovery!

Protostar:

Actually, I’d love to give a shoutout to my good friends like MakO, Dorincourt, Serren, Soundnet, Kursa, Gaz, Disprove, Reso etc (you know who you guys are, sorry if i missed anyone!!)
