Mathias Modica, known to most as German house technician and Gomma Records boss ‘Munk’. Munk returns to Gomma Records once again alongside long time friend Lizzie Paige, this time for disco infused, house heavy ‘Deceiver’. Alongside the original, Purple Disco Machine and LCAW mixes also appear, as well as a wonderfully stripped back, guitar inspired ‘Club Version’ from Munk. Given the opportunity to both interview and premiere Munk for this amazing four track release, we were very excited, read on for more info, and an in insight into the mind of Munk!

So who is Munk?

Munk

Munk is me, Mathias Modica, an italo-germam, living in berlin. Running the label Gomma with friends. Where we release ecclectic electronic avantpop music and Toy Tonics, where we do all forms of fresh and innovative house music.

When I do music myself as Munk I try to make fresh, new, different sounding electronic pop music. Its influenced by house, underground disco, new wave. On my Munk album I have always guest singers. In the past: James Murphy/Dfa, Asia Argento, on the new album: US born singer Lizzie Paige and London born Mona Lazette, both living with me in berlin.

Your track ‘Deceiver’ is out today, can you reveal the inspiration behind the track?

Munk

It’s about fall, Autumn, people getting melancholic, Winter coming, problems in love, all that stuff, all this vibe. I programmed a beat that is slightly different, a bit strange. Over it I play some pentatonic scales (the scales coltrane used to play in the last years, and a lot of arabia music is written in these harmonic shema) I think the song is quite special.

The EP includes remixes from two other artists, LCAW and Purple Disco Machine, how does it feel to have such talented producers remix your original work?

Munk

I know both very well. LCAW is just 19, but has this amazing career and for sure will be one of the top german producers of 2015. He has classcial skills like me (we both studied classical music at conservatory) so there is some connections apart of the interst in dance music. Purple Disco Machine comes from the Exploited camp, my friends from berlin.

It also features your own ‘club version’, what decisions made you come to create an additional mix?

Munk

It was more for fun. I wanted to see how guitars and a straight beat could work under the vocals, and it worked. So we decided to release it.

Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

Munk

I’m addicted to jazz music, more than electronic sounds.

Three tracks you can’t get enough of right now?

Munk

This Lupe Fiasco freestyle session I discovered last night on YouTube. The glen astro remix of the last Rhode & Brown single on our sub label Toy Tonics [and] the album of german kraut funk bans EXKURS from 81 that I just rediscovered
