Five Acts Who Set The Pace For Belfast’s Dance Scene

Psycatron, JC Williams, OneKnown, Bicep, Space Dimension Controller, Belfast, Top Five, Soundspace, Northern Ireland

Despite having a population of less than 300,000, Belfast has managed to hold it’s own on the international stage. With promoters such as Moth and AVA pushing the limits in 2015, the city is no doubt on it’s way to a go to spot in the world of dance music.

We put together a list of five acts we feel have played a part in the spread of dance music among the cities punters, we considered factors such as production, performance and foreign support.

5. Psycatron

Known to most as psycatron and the most experienced addition to our list, Paul Hamill and Dave Lievense come in at number five. Their intelligent dark techno rhythms have landed them players on mega imprints such as Cocoon, Planet E and Bedrock as well as their own Inflyte Recordings. The pair have received strong praise from dance influencers such as Dave Clarke and Laurent Garnier among many others.

2015 has unfortunately saw Psycatron become silent on both the production and performance side of things. With Paul launching his own music promo service and Dave committing to freelance studio work, they’re are no doubt otherwise busy, but we can only hope they find the time in the future to deliver more Psycatron sounds.

4. JC Williams

Fresh off his Soundspace release for SSR002, JC Williams makes number four on our list. His unique twist on generic deep house has saw a welcomed reception, with labels like Extended Play, Made Fresh Daily and 4LUX calling him up and he regularly delivers when it comes to gritty, club focused house grooves.

His forward thinking studio skills have secured him a spot as a go to booking for local promoters, appearing on bills for Shine, MiSFiT and The White Rabbit to name a few. We have high hopes for the future of John Craig, and any self respecting house head should too.

3. OneKnown

After a switch up of names not once, but twice, Belfast’s Chris Hanna has finally planted roots as OneKnown. The youngest act on the list, he has seen tracks feature on I-D, Annie Mac’s FMM and done official remix work for Ben Pearce’s Purp and Soul.

It was Chris’s collaboration with Gemma Dunleavy that really pushed the project, making appearances on Thump and Spin among others. With recent tracks Blue Galaxy and Jektify appearing online, the OneKnown sound has no doubt warped since the UnKnown days.

2. Bicep

The only inclusion on our list that currently don’t reside in Belfast is London based Bicep. Although now only vistors, there’s no doubt Belfast’s real dance fans hold a special appreciation for Bicep.

Originally established as a dance blog, the Feel My Bicep brand exploded as soon as the boys started focusing their efforts on the studio. Releases on AUS, Delicacies and appearances on Radio 1’s Essential Mix and Boiler Room have seen the Bicep name shoot to the top of the list of in demand headliners.

Bicep also played a big part in bringing Boiler Room to the city this month, as well as being a contributor to Ava Festival, a new event coming to Belfast May 30th, taking a fresh and dynamic approach to the showcasing of culture and arts.

1. Space Dimension Controller

Psycatron, JC Williams, OneKnown, Bicep, Space Dimension Controller, Belfast, Top Five, Soundspace, Northern Ireland

Topping our list is Funk meets Electro meets Disco future-esque producer Space Dimension Controller, since his debut LP via R&S Recordings he’s taken a step up with both production and DJing. With multiple Bolier Room appearances, a Fact set at Bloc 2015 and over 200,000 plays on The Love Quadrant, SDC has definitely made a name for himself both locally and on an international level.

Space Dimension Controller will also perform at AVA Festival and Boiler Room in Belfast this month on May 30th, we no doubt expect a quality performance with plenty of house, funk and disco.
