So who is Ashworth?

Ashworth

I’m Joe, a producer, DJ and sound designer living in London.

Your Grain LP is due out in July on NeedWhat, talk us through the inspiration behind the album?

Ashworth

I wanted to make a moving, emotional record that works on different layers. My music does generally revolve around clubs and DJ sets, and I wanted to embrace this, but also make a record which is diverse and unpredictable.

Grain and Cork are definitely two of our favourites from the LP, do any of the tracks stand out for you?

Ashworth

Thanks! I love how Adder and Sawdust sound when I play them in clubs, and although it’s a very short track, i’m very happy with the Descent.

You have music out on Anjunadeep, W&O Tracks and Littlehelpers among a number of others, how did the LP come to be on NeedWhat?

Ashworth

I’d been chatting to the guys at NeedWant for quite a while, and did an EP with a friend under an alias early last year. Then towards the end of the year, I got on a roll, made a tonne of music and it started to make sense to put it together as an album.

Will we maybe see a remixes EP of Grain in the future?

Ashworth

Yes – we already have a great remix of Cork, but I don’t want to announce it till we have the complete remix package. I did a couple of my own extended dub edits also which will be released at some stage.

Your worst experience as a DJ?

Ashworth

That’s an easy one – when USB CDJs first appeared, I was booked to DJ after Peaches was doing a live PA at a festival. She was performing ‘fuck the pain away,’ her final track, and I pulled her USB out as it was linked to the other deck plunging the stage into silence. She went crazy and made me apologise over the mic to thousands of people!

Soundspace

Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

Ashworth

I’m have a BcS and Diploma in town planning. That would have been my career if I hadn’t have managed to make it happen with music.

Soundspace

What’s the coolest thing in your house?

Ashworth

Probably the fridge/freezer.

Soundspace

What can we expect from Ashworth this summer?

Ashworth

A lot of DJing across Europe, maybe beyond, and a few more releases and remixes.

Soundspace

Anything to add?

Ashworth

I’m throwing a launch party at The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington (London) on July 10th. It’s a lovely, small venue with great sound and i’ll be playing all night.
