40 Questions: Torsten Kanzler

Torsten Kanzler has continued to do nothing but impress. Whether it’s bringing names like Boris, Simina Grigoriu and Drumcomplex to his own TK Records, or putting out his own productions on Driving Forces, Abstract or Supdub.

The Berlin based artist has been making moves with his rotund brand of dark techno, so what better time to have him face our 40 questions!

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

I’m sitting on my terrace, trying to answer these questions before I get sunburnt.

02. What year were you born?

The year when the rockband AC/DC was founded.

03. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

My fully automated coffee machine. I love trying out new types of coffee and having the possibility to have some delicious coffee whenever I want.

04. Worst experience as a DJ?

I remember one incident in Naples: the promoters were untraceable on the day after the gig, I didn’t get paid and I had to pay the cab and hotel myself. Shit happens.

05. Best experience as a DJ?

That’s hard to say, there are so many. It’s the whole thing being a DJ, I guess. The life as a DJ is a really amazing experience, I cannot think of anything better.

06. Favourite record label?

Besides my own label TKR, Octopus Records at the moment.

07. House or Techno?

08. First record you ever paid for?

The album ‘Nach uns die Sintflut’ by the German punkband Die Ärzte. The title means “after us, the deluge”. That was shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall, a very intense time of upheaval and I was full of revolutionary energy.

09. Studio or DJ booth?

Both – studio during the week and DJ booth at the weekends.

10. Your dream collaboration?

Laurent Garnier.

11. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

I’d rather not say.

12. Cats or dogs?

Honestly, I like both.

Yes, now and then at the weekends, it’s not easy for me to kick that habit.

14. Ever done drugs?

I tried, yes, when I was young and reckless.

15. Ever stole?

I still do. Every time I pass a fruit stand in the supermarket, I grab a grape or a strawberry.

Edge of the forest.

17. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

Chris Liebing is definitely one of them.

Back then I had to shovel coal into my grandma’s basement, I hated it.

Metodi Hristov – Helicopter (Octopus Black Label)

My family.

27. Favourite club you’ve played at?

The Lehmann Club in Stuttgart, Germany is one of my favourite clubs. Cool and professional promoters, great soundsystem and an awesome audience.

28. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Nearly all festivals I played at were fantastic, I couldn’t tell which one was the best. It’s just amazing playing open air, a whole different feeling than at the club.

29. Craziest story of being on the road?

Many years ago, while a colleague of mine and I were sitting in the hotel lobby, waiting for our driver to pick us up to go to the airport, a couple came into the hotel. They were fighting and all of a sudden the man just shot the woman down. Right before our eyes. We first were thunderstruck and then we fled into the hotel kitchen until the police released us. I won’t ever forget that.

30. Weirdest request as a DJ?

That practically doesn’t happen anymore. I remember one time when I was asked to do something rock-like with guitar, but that’s years ago. I accept something like that with humor.

I like neither of them. If Coke, only with Jack Daniel’s and ice.

Having a bath.

I really feel blessed being part of this wonderful scene with awesome and openminded people all over the globe…Thank you!
