40 Questions: Fatima Hajji

Spanish techno trailblazer Fatima Hajji has been on a consistently high run of form, releasing with Unity Records, Riot Recordings and her own Silver M imprint. Sustaining a busy touring schedule she has also played Privilege Ibiza and EGG London in recent months.

We invited Fatima to take on our 40 Questions where she discusses her experiences as a DJ, what’s on her bucket list and who she would love to collaborate with. Read on for Fatima Hajji’s 40 Questions.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

In a small town near the mountains (and not far to the airport) in the middle of the new forest we have in Madrid.

02. What year were you born?

1982, the year when Spain hosted the Soccer World Cup.

03. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

A catflap close to the human door, my cats are free to get in and out when they want.

04. Worst experience as a DJ?

Once I had​ to cancel three weekend gigs ​because of a terrible toothache (I was 10 days in a Hospital).

05. Best experience as a DJ?

To have the crowd chanting your name several minutes after closing.​ But, overall,​ just every day I can play my music is the best experience ever.

06. Favourite record label?

Soma Records.

07. House or Techno?

Techno obviously. I ​like house also but ​there’s ​no doubt about it at all.

08. First record you ever paid for?

Minus Orange – Richie Hawtin (Vinyl 1998).

09. Studio or DJ booth?

DJ​ booth. I​ love both but ​in ​the DJ​ booth I can get adrenaline, I’​m totally addicted.

10. Your dream collaboration?

​With Carl Cox. It doesn’t matter, it could be​ a track,​ a vs, a B2B​.

11. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

I’m weird, very weird. Among other things,​ I need an odd number room when ​I’m in a hotel.

12. Cats or dogs?

Both, I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, they are a family pack. I love animals.

13. Ever smoked?

Yes, a lot ​but​ I’ve not for about 4 weeks now (still vapping).

14. Ever done drugs?

Nope, I’​m so boring (w​hen I was younger some ​j​oints).

15. Ever stole?

No way, humm when I was a child I use​d​ to get​ money from my mother. My old brothers were sometimes victims also.

16. Busy city, or quiet beach?

Quiet beach or quiet natural place.

17. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

The first time I saw Carl Cox in Electrosonic Festival Spain. ​T​he energy and the good vibes were contagious.

18. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

Dog trainer or maybe ethologist.

19. Worst job you’ve ever had?

Telephone Operator of a fake Magazine, ​w​hen I realised I quit.

20. Favourite record right now?

Constructivism – Slam.

Yeke Yeke – Mory Kanté (1987).

24. Movies or books?

Lately books, ​I started​ to read late and I’m totally addicted.

25. Vinyl or CDJs?

Vinyl but ​it’s ​difficult to play at a lot of the venues ​because of ​equalisation and ​it’s​ hard to find all the ​music​ on this format.

27. Favourite club you’ve played at?

Gashouder, Amsterdam.

29. Craziest story of being on the road?

Once we ​ran out of​ gas ​on​ a motorway at 5am in front a gas station, my driver had to climb​ the fence of the highway to go to the gas station and buy a “bag” with some gas to continue to the next gas station before the police came​ and fined us.

30. Weirdest request as a DJ?

When I played for the Heroin Kids ​at Berghain​’s Kantine. Not a conventional techno party at all but really nice people handled it.

31. Coke or Pepsi?

1 Red Bull before to play and during the week ​water or tea.

32. If you had one super power what would it be?

Time travel.

33. Late sleeper or early riser?

Late sleeper medal of honour.

34. Favourite fruit?

Strawberry + Banana. Perfect combo.

35. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

Can I have 4 Sambucas?

36. Shower or bath?

Bath if I have time (minimum 2 hours),​ so usually every day it’s a​ shower.

37. The top thing on your bucket list?

I would like to make a clone of my dog. She’s very very special, really clever and expressive. she’s an American Stafford and 15 years old. It’s not usual for this breed to live so long but she is living a good life. I’m so lucky to have her.

38. PlayStation or Xbox?

I quit but PS4.

39. Do you have any pets?

2 Dogs and 2 Cats, they are my kids.

40. Anything to add?
