40 Questions: Charlotte de Witte

charlotte de witte, soundspace, interview, 40 questions, off recordings

At just 23 years old, Belgian talent Charlotte de Witte has performed at I Love Techno and Tomorrowland, released with Turbo and OFF Recordings, and hosts her own radio show on one of Belgiums leading broadcasters; Studio Brussels.

Her most impressive accomplishment to date though comes in the form of a 2015 release under ‘Raving George’, having achieved Gold status for sales. Not a feat many surpass in their early 20’s.

We welcome Charlotte to the 40 series as she gives us an insight into the life of a future trendsetter. We envision big things for this up’n’comer.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

Answering these questions in my couch. Recovering from ADE last weekend.

02. What year were you born?

03. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

A little boat in which you can grow an avocado tree. It’s called Avoseedo and you can also put a flag on your boat and name it.

04. Worst experience as a DJ?

Basically just getting booked in the wrong venue for the wrong kind of party. It happened not too long ago in a club in Antwerp where they should’ve kept it private but kept the doors open for regular customers whose musical knowledge doesn’t go much further then “Oh Casanova” or “Hey Ho Captain Jack!”. Horrible.

05. Best experience as a DJ?

Every time you’re standing in front of a crowd who appreciates and enjoys the kind of music you play and when there’s a good level of interaction.

06. Favourite record label?

Sleaze Records or Soma Records. Tough one here!

07. House or Techno?

08. First record you ever paid for?

Must’ve been Eiffel 65 – Blue, when I was just a kid. Haha!

09. Studio or DJ booth?

DJ booth.

10. Your dream collaboration?

Lera Lynn.

11. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

I’m addicted to soy sauce. I love the color, the texture, the liquidity, the taste.. I love everything about it!

12. Cats or dogs?

13. Ever smoked?

14. Ever done drugs?

15. Ever stole?

Probably some stuff when I was kid. I never was a full on criminal though. Thank God.

16. Busy city, or quiet beach?

17. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

Len Faki.

18. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

I have absolutely no clue. I would always end up in the music industry somehow.

19. Worst job you’ve ever had?

I started my career in music when I was 17, so besides some summer jobs and weekend jobs in catering or in a greenery, I actually never really had a job. Plus I quite enjoyed the jobs I did when I was younger.

20. Favourite record right now?

Aggborough – In a Sieve (Original Mix).

21. Favourite record of all time?

Something from The Beatles called Eleanor Rigby.

22. One thing you couldn’t live without?

Soy sauce.

23. Favourite food?

Sushi, mozzarella and avocado.

24. Movies or books?

Books on holidays and movies throughout the year. Although I must say I’m more of a series kind of person.

25. Vinyl or CDJs?

Vinyl for the sake of art and CDJs for convenience.

26. Favourite country to travel to?

I’ve been to Lapland in February and I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t the typical summer vacation where tanning is all you ever do but I was astonished by how grounded you could feel with nature. There was no noise at all and everything was so quiet and peaceful. Most relaxing trip I’ve ever done.

27. Favourite club you’ve played at?

It wasn’t really a club but It was a secret warehouse party in Cape Town. I was there a couple of years back and I lost my heart. The food, the people, the nature, the general vibe. Take me back, now.

28. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Must be Pukkelpop.

29. Craziest story of being on the road?

The sleep depravity and the awkward conversations that are caused by it. How you can sometimes make no sense at all.

30. Weirdest request as a DJ?

Where to start.. I’ve had some pretty bad and disrespectful ones in the beginning but luckily that has changed a bit throughout the years.

31. Coke or Pepsi?

None. I’m one of those weird people who don’t drink coke.

32. If you had one super power what would it be?

Telekinesis or something bad ass like Wolverine.

33. Late sleeper or early riser?

I used to be a late sleeper but now I’m an early riser. It’s quite important for me to maintain a normal rhythm during the week to stay in good mental health and feel productive. I need daylight in my life and wouldn’t be able to function if I had to live only during the night.

34. Favourite fruit?

Kiwi. Preferable yellow ones. Or actually no, an avocado. If that’s a fruit? (I just looked it up and it’s a fruit indeed. The avocado is actually a berry!)

35. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

Haha a friend of mine posted this on his wall a couple of months ago and I nearly pissed myself by watching it.

Doing the Inca Trail in Peru with a donkey wearing a chullo.

38. PlayStation or Xbox?

Playstation. Grand Theft Auto.

I have a dog called Risoul. I love that stinky little bastard to bits.

40. Anything to add?

I’m one of those lucky ones who’re not allergic to anything.
