When you think about the history of Berlin’s techno scene, several names come to mind, Paul Kalkbrenner, Ellen Allien, and of course Anja Schneider.

The German artist has played many of the worlds top clubs, and her music has found itself on labels like Knee Deep In Sound, Anjunadeep, and her own Sous Music.

Since launching the imprint towards the end of 2017, she has welcomed productions from Madben, Fort Romeau, Argy and Mella Dee and next up is a four tracker from Angioma.

Anja handles this months 40 Questions, where we find her discuss everything from Berghain and DJ Koze to Star Wars and Love Parade. Get the full interview below.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

You’ve caught me in the studio working on my new EP which is out on my label Sous.

02. What year were you born?

Before Techno!

03. Do you have a nickname?


04. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

An original Star Wars AT AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) and its the size of my son.

05. How would you describe yourself?

Funny, Impatient, Loyal, Ambitious, Curious, Passionate.

06. Worst experience as a DJ?

This has to be my first paid DJ gig at the beginning of the nineties in a tunnel in Potsdamer Platz before Paul Kalkbrenner. This had nothing to do with him! Only the start of my set, and having no experience whatsoever. Disaster.

07. Best experience as a DJ?

Too many! But if the sound system is good then it makes every gig the best, as I enjoy myself and love what I am doing even more.

08. Favourite record label?

There are so many, and so much good music out there. It would not be fair to name only one, sorry!

09. What’s your biggest weakness?

Being too generous.

10. First record you ever paid for?

Kraftwerk – Computer Liebe.

11. What’s your morning routine?

Making breakfast for my son. Having coffee and then going for a run!

12. Your dream collaboration?

Me and DJ Koze.

13. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

I’m the worst singer in the world but will never accept it, and I can’t stop singing all the time, which is complete torture for my family and friends.

14. Who’s your biggest inspiration?

Depeche Mode.

15. Ever smoked?

Constantly and I’m always giving up at least once a month.

16. Ever done drugs?


17. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

My Son.

18. And the best gift you’ve ever given?

Actually it’s the Star Wars AT AT, as that was something I bought for my son!

19. What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been to?

Peru / Maccau.

20. And one place you want to visit?

Really want to go to Ireland – I have never been!

21. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

The whole of Detroit! Mainly Underground Resistance.

22. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

Writing, not sure what though!

23. Worst job you’ve ever had?

Hahaha, the drive-in counter at McDonalds (Probably my basis for the radio career).

24. Favourite record right now?

Fort Romeau on Robert Johnson’s label.

25. And the best record ever made?

Drexciya – Everything.

26. One thing you couldn’t live without?


27. Your favourite food?

All and any kind of Mexican food, I love it!

28. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Original Blowfish in Tokyo.

29. Who would you want to play you in a movie?

James Bond.

30. What’s something you’re passionate about?


31. Favourite club you’ve played at?

Berghain / Panorama Bar (But many years ago).

32. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Love Parade, Berlin.

33. Craziest story of being on the road?

A lot, in fact, way too many – how long do you have?

34. Weirdest request as a DJ?

How would it be to play… minutes.

35. If you had one superpower what would it be?

To abolish ignorance.

36. Late sleeper or early riser?

Early riser.

37. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

All the things that my son seems to be able to find and watch!

38. The top thing on your bucket list?

Becoming a grandma.

39. Most memorable moment of your life so far?

Birth of my son.
