Fresh Picks: Denis Horvat

Denis Horvat delivers a sound that sits comfortably in that dimly lit corner of club music, where melodic clarity and low end punch meet in harmony, and one that has allowed him to build a roster of releases that includes record labels such as Afterlife, Innervisions, and Cercle Records.

The Copenhagen-based artist joins our Fresh Picks series this month, sharing some of the productions currently shaping his DJ sets, with tracks from Robag Wruhme, Upercent, and Sonson, as well as his latest collaboration with Matador, titled ‘Olfactory’.

Upercent – Upside Down

“Upercent always manages to make these weird, chunky sounds that fit really naturally into my sets. There’s a lot going on in the details, but it never feels overcrowded or like it’s trying too hard. I really like the low-key movement in this one, it keeps shifting and developing without needing any huge moments. It’s efficient in every aspect and one of those tracks that can quietly change the direction of a set.“

Agoria – Get Away (Henrik Schwarz Dub)
Label: Sapiens Recordings

“I’ve always liked the organic feeling Henrik Schwarz brings to his productions and remixes, and this dub has exactly that quality. It feels warm, loose, and very natural, but there’s still enough weight underneath it to work properly in a club. For me it’s a really good track for making an easy entry into a set, when I want to establish a groove without giving too much away too early.“

Sonson ft. Rosa Taccarelli – We Dance
Label: Lossless

“I’ve been playing this track for a long time now and it still finds its way into my sets. The stabs are really catchy and the vocal phrases give it an identity immediately, without taking over the whole record. It’s one of those tracks that is very easy to place because it has enough character to be memorable, but still leaves you plenty of room to move somewhere else afterwards.“

White Sheep – Wonky
Label: Nervous Records

“This is a monster tune for me. I use it a lot as a transition point in my sets, when I’m moving from the warmer, more restrained part of the night into something closer to peak time. It has enough groove to connect naturally with what came before, but there’s a definite change in energy when it arrives. That makes it a really useful record when I want to start turning things up without making the transition feel forced.“

Robag Wruhme – Fumaxohn
Label: Cocoon Recordings

“I’ve always loved Robag’s approach because his grooves can be weird, playful, and slightly unpredictable, while still working perfectly on a dancefloor. There’s usually something happening that makes you stop and listen a little closer. ‘Fumaxohn’ has all of that for me. It has this strange energy and movement that I really connect with, and it’s become one of those records that very rarely misses a place somewhere in my sets.“

Matador & Denis Horvat – Olfactory

“‘Olfactory’ came from working together with Matador and finding a space where both of our sounds could exist without either of us having to compromise too much. I think you can hear elements of both of us in the record, which is always what I want from a collaboration. It has the detail and slightly unusual character I naturally gravitate towards, but it also has enough drive and immediacy to really work in a club.“
